Photographic Evidence

As promised, here is photographic evidence of my plant taking-caredness skillz.

Now do you believe me when I say that I’m not (always) a cold-blooded plant killer? OK. That last picture shows a close-up of the plant that’s “struggling” a bit, but other than that, they’re doing pretty dang well. ESPECIALLY the hydrangea. RIGHT???!!!

Tutorial Tuesday - Hanging Planters!

Check. This. Out. I’ve kept plants alive for several weeks. And not just “alive,” but they are actually growing new flowers. OK. One of the plants is on its last legs, but the others are doing fabulously! I was fully planning on having photographic evidence of this, but I totally forgot to snap some pix yesterday. I’ll post some. I promise.

The one problem I’m having (well, I’m obviously having other problems since one isn’t doing so well) is that I pretty much have nowhere to put these plants. Our apartment gets very little sun. The only place to guarantee any is on the kitchen window sill. But it’s crowded up there now, so I’m trying to look for ways to give them the light they need (nay, DESERVE!), but not make it nearly impossible for me to shut the window when I want to use the blender every day (I wish I could say it was to make green smoothies - and no it’s not margaritas). So, this brings me to today’s tutorials - hanging planters. Now I just have to figure out which one to do.

Before I get started, I just want to clear something up. I know that making a hanging planter is pretty easy because the directions would pretty much consist of “find something you can ram some dirt and a plant into, poke some holes in it and run string through said holes to hang from the ceiling. Voila.” But…I need to see it visually. You guys know how I am about pictures. I NEED THEM!

So…let’s bring on the macrame. Never did I think those words would come out of my mouth. Macrame remind me of the 70’s so much. And not in a good way. I don’t know why I have such a visceral reaction to it, but…I do. But now that I’ve found some more modern versions of it, I might be able to swing it.

Embroidery hoop hanger. I thought I’d start with the NON-macrame one. Although, I’ll be perfectly honest - my faith that the bowl is going to stay securely glued to that wooden embroidery hoop is pretty thin. But I love it. Specifically because it’s not…say it with me…macrame.

Wooden hanging planter. Neato! Alas, this wouldn’t really work in the window and I don’t get enough light anywhere else (were you guys paying attention?), so this is a no-go. But maybe you’d like to try it. See, I’m a giver!

Modern hanging planters. I’m starting out the macrame ones with this one because it’s actually a video. GREAT instructions. It even shows you how to paint the bottom half of the glass bowls (or bowels as my fingers wanted to type).

Geometric hanging planter. DING DING DING! I think we have a winner. And in case you can’t see it on the tutorial, here’s the link to how to make the little planter part (which you’ll obviously have to insert a pot into as it’s cardboard). OR you can use the great tutorial and templates I used to make the bloktagon candles. And then just follow the other directions to make the stringy part.

Macrame hanger. I figured I’d just give in to the whole macrame thing and show you how to get a little more fancy with it. If you like that sort of thing.

Now…please don’t respond with additional ideas of hanging plants in tires or old boots. Even tin cans or 2-liter bottles. WHAT IS THIS? AMATEUR HOUR??????? Don’t be cute.

I Was Born This Way

I’ve been meaning to post this for a while now, but I kept forgetting. Until now. I won’t say you’re welcome. Yet. Oh, and for those of you who are my Facebook friends, I apologize for making you read this again. Actually, I don’t. The world shouldn’t be deprived.

A girl I went all through school with (well, she took a couple of years off to go to Catholic school, but we’ll forgive her for that) was recently cleaning out her parents’ attic and ran across copies of our 6th grade school newspaper - The Harris Hill Chronicle. Now, I remember the paper. I remember its existence and I know I must have written for it - everyone in our grade did. But I didn’t remember anything specifically. I wasn’t some sort of reporter in the making. But, as you will see, I was something else.

I was the exact same person I am now. Bitter and filled with hatred. To be honest, there was another girl listed as one of the writers of this “article” (I cropped out her name because I’m not sure she wants it posted here), but it seems like it’s pretty much my “voice.” I can only imagine my tiny rage as I wrote this. No lunch lady is getting the best of me! The world will read about you and your screaminess! (Side note - I do remember the hamburgers. They were gross.)

Next up is my shot at creative writing.

Oh wait. Not just my creative writing, but my illustrations. I think I can safely say that I NAILED both mushrooms AND grass. But more importantly, what is the meaning behind this story? Ryan thinks it was my desire to break free from my Footloose-like town (it was not remotely like the movie Footloose). I think the big mushrooms were my sisters and they were telling everyone that stupid story about the dead bunnies (I will tell you that one day). They vexed me at every turn (no they didn’t). Also, my scientific facts were a little askew as if a mushroom freed itself from the ground…it would die. Right? I mean, we all die, but it would die pretty quickly I’m assuming.

I think I should write a follow-up story about what happened to Andy and Shawna. Are they still together (they did kinda rush into that marriage)? Did they have tiny mushrooms? Were they as sensitive as Andy? Or did Andy die a couple of days after he and Shawna got married? Probably that last one.

Thank you Katie for posting these!! They made me feel better. I haven’t grown old and crotchety. I was born that way.

Soooooo…YOU’RE WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
