I just went to make sure that these were indeed called inter-office envelopes because Ryan looked at me like I had lobsters coming out of my ears when I said that. Although, I have no idea why I would have doubted myself as I’ve worked in an office for 47 years and he’s worked in an office 0.00 years. ANYWAY, after seeing the sheer volume of miscellaneous papers I need to bring with me on vacation (the copies of any and all identification is a bit of a pain), I realized that I was going to need a place to house it all. A place where I could keep them all together and tidy. I’m sure you’re like “Ummmmm…I think you’re talking about a folder. This isn’t rocket science, Lizzie.” HA! (That’s me laughing in your face). A folder?! What is this, amateur hour? This lady goes big or goes home.
But the fun’s not over. Check out the back:
GAH! Don’t you love it?! What do I care what you think because I DO! I love the concept generally, but the green buttons…PERFECTION! And it’s funny because I was sitting at my computer, LABORING over what to embroider on the front and literally (you guys know how I feel about that word) 2 minutes later, a school friend of mine (I’m lookin’ at you, Kim Ryan!) posted this on my Facebook wall. And…I was searching no longer. I wanted to put a little bit of a twist on it, though, so I put the paper airplane on it too (since we’ll be on an airplane - not paper obviously) and the shamrock.
NOW, let me start by saying that this is a tutorial that I tweaked a bit. It’s this:
But this is actually a no-sew tutorial. I tried it and, while it looked fine, I knew that those loose edges were going to drive me batty. Maybe if I had chosen a different fabric that didn’t “shed” like crazy. SO, I decided to use their pattern, but added 1/4″ around the entire thing so that I could just sew it like ”normal” - right sides together (with a piece of interfacing attached to one side), 1/4″ seam allowance, sew all the way around (leaving several inches open at the bottom), turn right-side out, and then top-stitch around the entire thing to both fancy it up and close up the hole in the bottom. After that, I just went back to the tutorial directions and steam-a-seamed the edges together. Voila! No more edges flying in the wind. And it’s PERFECT! It’ll hold everything together, but still be a little bendy so that I can freely ram it into my carry-on with all my other necessary items. Unlike that other HIDEOUS idea that you idiots had - a folder. Please. You guys can be so dumb sometimes. I’m embarrassed that we’re even friends at this point.

This is awesome! Cute and “ram-able” are my qualifications for everything! Good on ya lady!
Thanks! And I agree ram-able and cute - perfect combo.
That’s sooooo cute! :)
Thanks! Pretty dang easy to make too!
This is so stinking cute! Especially the buttons, duh! I am amazed at the constant output of projects you do. I am way too lazy for that nonsense. Oh, and how is the knitted poof coming?
Nikki Kelly @ the ambitious procrastinator
Well, there’s going to be a dry spell of projects for a little bit. The knitted pouf is coming along slowly. I was just looking at it this morning and I TOYED with bringing it with me on the plane, but then realized that was crazy talk. Now that it’s getting cooler, I’ll probably haul it out. The yarn is so heavy and to have it sitting in my lap is sweat-inducing.
Do you embroider freehand? Or did you use a template for this? It’s adorable!
I guess I don’t really understand embroidery.
I’ve done cross stitch before, but there was always a pattern or guideline to follow. I think if I tried to do it from scratch or freehand it, it would end up looking like I had sewed it with my feet.
I think a blog about embroidery (or just a personal email to me *wink*) would be very helpful! I mean, I guess I could use Google. But it’s so impersonal…
If you watch my video tutorial, it shows you everything you want to know - from figuring out what design you want, to getting it on your fabric and embroidering. It’s 17 minutes, though, so hold on to your butt.
