SO, you saw my post earlier with a few of the art projects from the art party. Oh, and the post where I “showcased” my identity pillow project. I also wanted to show you guys some of the decorations I made as I’m pretty impressed with myself. I guess I need to work on my humility…
First off, the centerpieces. I was initially struggling for ideas, but then I stumbled upon this tutorial to make billy buttons and I decided to go for it. I got some cheap(ish) vases from Ikea, made all the felt balls, inserted the flower stems and came out with this:
BOOM! I REALLY like them. And my friends’ house is very mod, so I thought this went along with their style well.
THEN, I decided to change up the paper lantern idea. This time, I thought I could hang mason jars with candles inside from the trees in the yard. I’ve been dying to try dyeing (get it?) glass, so I gave that a go with Vitrea 160 turquoise dye using this tutorial. There was a pretty good-sized learning curve with these, but I really liked the color that I came out with in the end. (Note: if you ever try this, I suggest mixing the dye with so much Vitrea thinner that you are almost certain you’ve over-thinned it. That way you get a really light hue. My 2 cents).
Of course, I was then worried about the style. I wanted it to be a little more “hip” than mason jars hanging from trees. Don’t get me wrong. I love it. But I’m aiming to please some hip peeps. Then Ryan apparently had an epiphany. He suggested suspending the jars in those string ball things! GOOD GRIEF! I swear that kid is a straight-up genius sometimes. I cannot begin to say how much I love the finished product:
I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but…THESE ARE FREAKING AWESOME AND RYAN IS AN IDEA MACHINE (so, toooooooot)!!!! The one downside to these is the fact that I now, again, feel like I would sell my soul for a house with a yard so that I can hang the HECK out of stuff like this. Blerg.
Oh, and here’s an example of what life is like at my “house” when I’m trying to make those string lights.
They are looking for ANY opportunity to pounce and destroy all my hard work. Look at Ted’s thousand yard stare. I just need to look down for a second and that little paw will do great damage. And Ralph… Life is not your playground, you guys!!!!!
